| Bearcats ground out an impressive 31-6 victory | By Mike Martin The Daily World | | Sunday, September 27, 2009 1:14 AM PDT | | | | Print Version | E-mail This Story | |
| | Unable to get their passing game going early, the Grays Harbor Bearcats took to the ground to rush past the Oregon Blackshirts.
Tallying 222 yards rushing, the Bearcats closed out their regular season with a 31-6 win at Olympic Stadium.
Jeff Gates rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Robbie Chicano gained another 62 and added a score.
“It was an efficient job up front,” Grays Harbor coach Todd Hoiness said. “They really played to stop our pass, blitzed less than we thought, so we just took the air out for a while.”
A while included 17 of 19 plays on the Bearcats’ first scoring drive. Taking over on their own 23 after a fumbled snap, the Bearcats (7-2 in league, 8-2 overall) used Gates, Chicano and fullback Tim Lee to grind out a 19-play, 77-yard drive that took over nine minutes.
Already accounting for 44 yards on the drive, Gates got the final two by taking an option pitch from David Evans into the end zone on fourth down.
The score remained 7-0 until midway through the third quarter. Forcing the Blackshirts to turn the ball over on downs, Grays Harbor went 41 yards in seven plays, with Gates again punching it in from two yards out.
Bryce Ogren tacked on three more in the third with a 22-yard field goal to open a 17-0 lead.
Chicano’s 1-yard scoring plunge capped a 75-yard scoring drive early in the fourth quarter and put the game away.
The Bearcat defense, which held the Blackshirts to 30 yards rushing on the night, watched its shutout bid go by the wayside when Jeremy Shay hit Michael Scott streaking up the sideline for a 55-yard touchdown pass with 9:40 left in the game.
“I was sorry to see the defense lose that shutout, but it was a good showing. We really flew around tonight,” said Hoiness.
The Bearcats sacked Shay six times, and forced a pair of fumbles.
Grays Harbor’s final score came with 5:55 left when David Evans hit Daniel Harris on a rollout pass, and Harris went 23 yards for the score.
With the passing game opening up in the second half, Grays Harbor’s quarterback rotation of Alex Todak and Evans threw for a combined 150 yards.
Joe Winther caught three balls for 61 yards and was cited, along with the entire offensive line by Hoiness for a strong showing.
Rallying to the football all night, the Bearcat defense had numerous standouts, headed by Ryan Knight and Daniel Brown.
The Bearcats host the Renton Ravens next Saturday in the inaugural Far West Alliance Bowl.
