Buzzards defeat Bearcats 36-0

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — The Grays Harbor Bearcats wound up licking their wounds on one of their longest road trips of the season.

The Springfield Buzzards capitalized on a succession of Bearcat injuries and penalties to stun the previously unbeaten Harborites, 36-0, in a Pacific Football League game Saturday at Cottage Grove.

Short-handed entering the game, the Bearcats (2-1, 3-1) saw matters deteriorate rapidly once the whistle blew. Starting quarterback David Evans was sidelined in the first quarter with a concussion. Jeremy Foulds, one of Grays Harbor’s leading defenders, suffered an apparently serious knee injury.

“We probably had 10 guys go down — some starters, some backups,” Grays Harbor coach Todd Hoiness said. “We went in a little short-handed and it got worse.”

The injury situation was bad enough that Hoiness said the team might stage another tryout session this week to replenish its roster. The Grays Harbor coach even engaged in some gallows humor afterward.

“We got back to the locker room and somebody put a Red Cross sign on it — they didn’t, but they should have,” he said. “We’re going to have a mobil medical unit going back tonight. I don’t want to make excuses. They beat us fair and square and played well enough to win. We didn’t and our injuries compounded it.”

The Buzzards used a strong running game in taking a 23-0 halftime lead. They also cashed in on 18 Grays Harbor penalties.

Jack Traxtle, normally a fullback and safety, filled in at quarterback when Evans went down. Hoiness cited the unrelated Browns, Joel and Dan, for strong defensive play.

The Bearcats host the Kitsap Bears next Saturday.
