Well what a day it has been. Started off with an email from the NAFLNW Commisioner Lorrie Rarey informing us that the Longhorns would NOT be making the trip down to play the Gray Harbor Bearcats and due to internal reason within their organization won't finish the season in the NAFL. Next was furry of work by every other team in the league and some of those not in the league to find us an opponent for Saturday night. The good news is that the Washington Cavaliers of the NWFL, Northwest Football League, have agreed to play a game against us on July 11th. So what this means is that everything is all good! Fans, sponors, players, owners, wifes, children rest easy. Football will be played. Consession food will be eaten, faces will be painted.... Gates open at 4pm see you all there! Any questions please give us a call. Don Orton, President Grays Harbor Bearcats 1.800.575.6922 |

The Bearcats opened on the road in Portland, with a very tough Raider team. The Raiders scored early to take a 7-0 lead on a deep pass over two defenders. That score would hold until the second half when the Bearcats scored 21 unanswered points and the Defense stiffened up and didn't allow the Raiders to score in the second half. The Bearcats have a bye for the 4th of July, and then get to bring Football to the harbor with their home opener, July 11th at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam when they take on the Langely Longhorns who are coming of a tough loss to the powerhouse Bellingham Bulldogs this week. Photos of the game will be posted later today. |

SNOHOMISH — Vernon Word’s 2-yard touchdown run with 4:44 remaining in overtime gave the Grays Harbor Bearcats a come-from-behind 26-20 victory over the Snohomish County Vikings in an exhibition semi-pro football game Saturday night at Snohomish.
Closing out their preseason slate with a 2-0 record, the Bearcats will open North American Football League Northwest Region season June 27 on the road against the Portland Raiders.
The Bearcats rallied from a 20-7 halftime deficit to forge a 20-all standoff at the end of regulation.
Snohomish County got the opening possession in the sudden-death overtime, but eventually punted from midfield. Elma High School graduate Robby Lisle shipped the return back approximately 50 yards to put the Bearcats inside the Viking 30. A few plays later, Word punched in the winning TD.
“It was a really gutsy win, coming all the way up here,” said Grays Harbor coach Todd Hoiness. “It was kind of like a program builder.”
Experiencing difficulty with Snohomish County’s blitz earlier, the Bearcats took control of the line of scrimmage in the second half. “At halftime, we told the defense they had to get three turnovers and they did that,” said Hoiness. “And we needed to pick up their pressure and dominate them up front and that’s what we did in the second half.”
Word’s 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter narrowed the margin to seven. A 4-yard run by Hoquiam alum Jeff Gates and the conversion kick by Bryce Ogren, another ex-Grizzly, tied it early in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Alex Todak scrambled 11 yards for Grays Harbor’s initial touchdown in the first period.
Lisle blocked a Snohomish County PAT in the first half and Jake Early blocked a Viking field-goal attempt in the final stanza.
The Bearcats were missing six starters — three on each side of the ball — due to prior commitments.
Hoiness cited Aberdeen’s Jon Favro, Hoquiam’s Matt Barrie and Elma’s Aaron Zepp for filling in for the absent regulars. |
